8-10-11 – 10:19 PM CST – It has been a little bit more than 48 hours since I logged off of Facebook for a week. No birthdays have been missed, the world has kept spinning. I have ran every day, lifted weights everyday, and even had a little bit more time for some TV, all without Facebook.
And then I started thinking…
Our lives with the internet have turned into another installment of the “Revenge of the Nerds” franchise. And just like the movies, this is the moment when I figured out, everyone is a nerd. We are on facebook, all day, everyday. We Tweet, write blogs, post pictures, and interact on a computer every moment of everyday. Our video games are computers, microwaves, dishwashers, even our dryers will send us an e-mail when our laundry is dry! Just as Ogre became a nerd, so have we.
That thing in your pocket, or on your hip, ya, that’s a computer. The revolution happened without a shot being fired. We are all nerds. The ultimate victory, Comic-Con, is now something cool. Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, yes, even Mr. Winnfield himself, Samuel L. Jackson, has been to Comic-Con.
What does this mean? Nothing. We’re all nerds. To quote Gilbert Lowell from Revenge of the Nerds, “I’m a nerd, and I’m proud of it.” Computers are amazing, they have, and will continue to change the World, unite people, start revolutions, educate, inspire, connect, and empower.
But for Facebook, do we need to be posting every minute of everything we do online, probably not. Can we take the time out of our busy schedules to simply pick up the phone, call and old friend, and say “Hello, how have you been?” Instead of virtually staying connected to someone this week, how about you turn off the computer, pick up the phone, and have a good, old-fashioned telephone conversation with another human being. With all the connections we have, we have never been further disconnected from each other in a community sense. The computer goes away, and so does the community. We can have both if we just put in a little extra effort. Happy tweeting!!!

“There are few things more liberating in life than having your worst fear realized” – Conan O’Brien
Conan O’Brien delivered the commencement address at Dartmouth College this year. Although this video is tremendously funny, it also carries with it an excellent lesson in dreams, disappointment, failure, and rebirth.

Which of the four are getting in the way?
You don’t know what to do
You don’t know how to do it
You don’t have the authority or the resources to do it
You’re afraid
Once you figure out what’s getting in the way, it’s far easier to find the answer (or decide to work on a different problem).
Stuck is a state of mind, and it’s curable.
